THE SUMMER SOUNDS - UP DOWN (LAUREL 1969)

Mega rare album from the Dartmouth, Massachusetts fivepiece outfit which was released originally on the Laurel label (Laurel 331098) in 1969.Up-Down is an album of largely self-penned material (only 2 covers, one of which is a strong version of The Spencer Davis Group’s hit, Gimme Some Lovin’) with The Leaves Are Turning Brown, complete with cheesy psych organ and wonderfully earnest vocals, is the stand out track!
..................
Up-Down is a beat-garage concept album detailing the highs and lows of a summer vocation romance, with, as you would expect, loads of moody teenage angst and lashings of self pity. The songs are all catchy, and there are a couple of good ballads.Summer Sounds was one of the best groups of its genre and consequently a number of the band’s tunes have been comp’d, although this is the first time that this album, with it’s ultra cool cover, has been reissued.
Track Listing: 1. Small World 2. Hard To Please 3. Lonely Beach 4. Gimme Some Lovin’ 5. One Last Kiss 6. The Leaves Are Turning Brown 7. Summer 8. I Love You 9. First Date 10. You Told Me...

I love your blogs! This "Summer Sounds" album is a little gem. These guys were, fortunately, about three years behind the times when they cut this album...bless their hearts!

Their originals are quite good. I'll listen to this one fairly often!

This blog is chock-full of other similarly great posts... wonderful stuff! Just want you to know your work is deeply appreciated!

it stared the darts then the summer sounds then fire and ice

the main constant in the transformation of these groups was Joe. Talented, personable and driven. A treasured memory.

Joe was not the only member of the band other members went on to other bands like voyage and aftermath!!!

the reference to Joe was only applicable to him since he was the one who was in the Darts, Summer Sounds, & Fire & Ice. Sounds like someone has a bruised ego.

The point made was Joe was in all of these groups. Sounds like someone is feeling a bruised ego!!!

Sounds like a little sour grapes. The recognition was that Joe played in all the groups. There wasn't any measure of comparison.

The comment was Joe played in all 3 bands. The comment was not intended for who went where. Feeling a little competitive are we? We are all retirees now shouldn't have anything to prove at this point!!!

The statement was Joe was in all 3 bands. The statement was misinterpreted wrong and it sure sounds like somebody is still trying to prove something after all these years. Jealously always rears it's ugly head.
