APPALOOSA - APPALOOSA (COLUMBIA 1969) Japan DSD mastering cardboard sleeve

The acoustic, folk influenced group Appaloosa was the project of violinist Robin Batteau and guitarist, songwriter, singer John Parker Compton. Their lone release 1969's APPALOOSA, bears the heavy scent of the '60s coffeehouse scene, with overtones ... Full Descriptionof jazz (there's some nice saxophone work here) and Renaissance minstrel sounds (a la Steeleye Span) threaded through literate, melancholic singer-songwriter fare. The combination works nicely, and makes for a nice listen....[net]
Appaloosa has a sound that is hard to put in a box, maybe folk rock baroque. The lead singer, John Compton, has an easy intimacy, which Robin Bateau's faithful cello complements through many of the ballads. Each song is a sweet private journey....[net]
The violin/cello solos and arrangements interweave to give the folk music a unique and unforgettable sound. This music is pure and vibrant, produced by the legendary Al Kooper....[net]

A personal favourite for a long time now. A further album, released under the name "Compton & Batteaux" is very interesting too, though not as strong. Bought the original Lp for 20€ at a flea market not long ago. There's also a very good John Compton solo LP, "To Luna" and the man is still active today. He recently released a whole album of Tim Hardin songs, that unfortunately I haven't been able to find until now.

Thank you !!!

I would disagree with Frumious B's estimation of the Compton & Batteau LP, "In California". I have had a long love affair with this and The Batteaux Lp that foloows making it three for Robin Batteau on Columbia. I always found the Appaloosa the hardest listen (I'll try it again now).
The C&B LP had Randy Meisner & Rusty Young from Poco, John London & John Ware from Mike Nesmith's National Bands, Jiom Messina just post Springfield and pre-Loggins & Pat Shannahan from Rick Nelson's group (where Randy Meisner had just been also). It is a fine country rock LP with 4 ecological narratives inserted throughout the songs, which really can grow on you. When Robin hooked up with brother David next in Batteaux they went jazzy & world beat on top of the folkier stuff and with essentially Joni Mitchell's back up, The LA Exdpress and Henry Lewy's production, produced an unsung 70s masterpiece, IMHO.
